Situated on Northern Maharashtra’s long coastline Dahanu and its surrounding area are well-known for their pristine beach, which stretches from Chinchani to Zai. This region is a storehouse of culture, history and traditions. As close as a 3-hour drive from Mumbai, the area is the home to the famous Warli tribe, best known for their world famous Warli paintings. To add to this, you also have the awesome food, activities galore, and the famous Chikoo Festival.

Dahanu-Gholvad has a history of growing the best Chikoos in Maharashtra. Acres and acres of lush greenery, a serene coastline dotted by Casaurina / Suru trees and rows of Chikoo trees adorning the countryside, this region is one of the best places one can visit to rejuvenate.

The economy of the region largely depends on Chikoo production and other agro-based activities. Recently Dahanu-Gholvad has been awarded “Geographical Indication” for their quality production of Chikoos. The aim behind organising Chikoo Festival is to boost entrepreneurship development in the region. This festival then became a tradition for the people of Bordi. Incepted in the year 2013, the Chikoo Festival is an initiative of MTDC, supported by State Agriculture Department and local organizations. To add to its relevance, the event is organised by the local people that makes the festival a success, each time – every time.The production of Chikoo, holds a huge significance to the economy of the Dahanu region. This led to the idea of naming the festival, “Chikoo Festival”. This festival brings with it a hub of delightful foods, fun filled activities, farm visits and happiness, all in one place.

Mr. Prabhakar Save
The fore bearer of Chikoo Festival is Mr. Prabhakar Save. Closely involved with tourism development, Mr. Save is passionate about creating a difference in the region. He runs a successful Agro-Tourism venture called “Tarpa”, which is actively popularising farm tourism concept among farmers and nature loving urban population.
Mrs. Phiroza Tafti: Mrs. Phiroza Tafti is an environmental activist and closely works with the tribals to create awareness and preserve their cultural heritage. Mrs. Tafti is the convenor of INTACH and active member of Greenpeace, India. She personally conducts the “Tribal Village Tour” during the festival to ensure the smooth functioning of the festival.

Committee Members
The Chikoo Festival Committee has integrated in to Rural Entrepreneurship Welfare Foundation(REWF). The trust comprises of local citizens involved in different professions gathered together for the cause of agro, food-processing and tourism based entrepreneurship development which shall help retain the environment haven that the region is.
